Stem And Leaf Plot

Definition

A Stem and leaf plot arrange a numeric-dataset by their place values. At first, there is an arrangement of place values in a column in ascending order called stems. There associated numeric values are written corresponding to their stems as branches.

Why do you need it?

Stem and leaf plot is used to see the density and shape of the dataset. It is really useful to see the distribution pattern in such a way that it is easy to understand and efficient.

What kind of data you can visualize with it?

If you have a dataset of numeric-series, then it could be beneficial. Assume you have a dataset like 15,16,21,23,23,26,26,30,32,41. If you want to make a stem and leaf plot of this data, then it would look like the plot above. Here stem “1” and leaf “5” mean 15, which is the first value of our dataset.
